Reception, Class 1 and Class 2

Full-time school begins in Reception. This is a special transition year in which the children move on to complete all the areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. They begin acquiring some of the literacy and numeracy skills of Key Stage 1, which is the National Curriculum basis for Class 1 and Class 2. Reception, Class 1 and Class 2 are all based nearby at our Balham High Road site. School hours are 8.50 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. with optional after school clubs from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

In Class 1 and Class 2 the children follow a curriculum based on and extending beyond the National Curriculum. Our high teacher-pupil ratios, the professionalism and enthusiasm of all our teachers and teaching assistants, and the support from our parents enables our children to work above their curriculum age in many areas. This means that in year 2 they can extend beyond Key Stage 1 skills and ensures that they are very well-prepared for their chosen prep-schools when they leave Bertrum House.
